Sydney: Cortana is an intelligent personal assistant developed by Microsoft for Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 10 Mobile. Earlier, Cortana was available only on Windows devices but now the support for Cortana has been extended to Android and iOS devices as well. As it was created to be a personal assistant that would be available on the go, Microsoft had to take this step of expanding it to iOS and Android platforms as well.
Cortana can be thought as the Microsoft’s version of Siri that helps you get the things done. Now the Android and iOS users can start downloading and installing Cortana on their devices. It helps you to manage the appointments and tasks, keeps you reminded about your to-do list and also entertains you with a joke or two. Apart from this, Cortana also helps you to track packages and flights, view live scores, manage emails, and so on.
Will Siri users switch to Cortana?
It has just been a few days that Cortana is introduced to Android and iOS platforms; it’s too early to say this, but it seems doubtful that iOS users would give up Siri for Cortana. However, it can be useful for Android users as most of the Android users work on Windows laptop or desktop; so Cortana can help them in keeping the contents synchronized across the devices.
Is Cortana compatible with all the devices?
In order to install Cortana, you need a device that is running Android 4.1.2 and above or iOS 8 and above. If you are on Windows 10, you can easily sync your phone or tablet to install Cortana directly if you have a compatible version of mobile operating system.
Can it match the standards of Siri or Google Now?
It’s not clear that what the Google Now users on Android and Siri users on iOS gain from Cortana. But the native services on both the platforms tend to be more capable and even richer than Cortana can be. There are a few constraints on iOS like no hands free capability, no settings integration, no SMS replies for missed calls and so on; this puts Cortana at a marked disadvantage when compared to Siri.
The connection was debuted recently in US and China with new Cortana app that allows Windows 10 users to share the data across iPhones, Android phones and PCs. While Siri and Google Now are staying ahead in their own ways, Microsoft is thinking about ways to improve the integration on rival platforms.
